Please come with your questions and concerns!

This workshop will be facilitated by an experienced cloth diapering mommy, Joanne Khow. Joanne has been cloth diapering since 2006 from her first kid. She has 2 kids now respectively 2 and half year Daughter, Adele and 9 mths old son Arden. She is also a stay at home mother. She helps with her husband's business from home occasionally. She strongly supports an eco friendly environment and believe that it can be incorporated into raising our children. Cloth Diapering is 1 of the ways. She has personally tried about 19 different brands of Cloth Diaper. She strongly believes that there is 1 brand cloth diaper for every baby.

Any other cloth diapering moms are welcome to share your experience too.

Fei Ru is an ex-breastfeeding mom of 2. A frequent business traveler, being away around 30% of the time, but managed to continue breastfeeding without introducing any formula milk until children were over 14-18 months old. Children were exclusively breastfed for 6 months and subsequently with solid until they nearly self-weaned.

Fei Ru will share on how she did it, which she will also bring along her gears like luggage bag, cooler box, ice packs, etc... to demo.

This session will benefit moms who wish to know more about:

Fabulous Mom and Baby Signs Malaysia are co-conducting a Parent Workshop. A one-time 2-hour instructional event designed to introduce parents (and parents to be) who would like to communicate with the baby in their life before they can talk, to the Baby Signs® Program of infant communication. It is geared for adults looking to teach signs to babies aged 0 to 2 ½ years or toddlers who have communication delays. In this Workshop, you will be taught everything you need to know to get started with the Baby Signs® Program.

Each participant will receive a Parent Kit or Complete Starter Kit, which costs RM180. The Parent Workshop fee is RM250 per participant (inclusive of Kit). For every additional participant (e.g. if your husband would like to attend with you), the additional cost is RM50. On the 28th of March, we are most honoured to have Wai Han to share on Preparing for a Gentle Birth - a topic which will interet all expectant moms - first timers or moms who had unpleasant birth experience.

Wai Han is a certified HypnoBirthing® Childbirth Educator, accredited and affliated with the HypnoBirthing Institute. She received her training from the founder, Marie Mongan, and is among the first batch of certified practitioners in Malaysia and Asia.

Baby Signs(R) Parent Workshop (14 Feb, 2.30pm)

Fabulous Mom and Baby Signs Malaysia are co-conducting a Parent Workshop. A one-time 2-hour instructional event designed to introduce parents (and parents to be) who would like to communicate with the baby in their life before they can talk, to the Baby Signs® Program of infant communication. It is geared for adults looking to teach signs to babies aged 0 to 2 ½ years or toddlers who have communication delays. In this Workshop, you will be taught everything you need to know to get started with the Baby Signs® Program.

Each participant will receive a Parent Kit or Complete Starter Kit, which costs RM180. The Parent Workshop fee is RM250 per participant (inclusive of Kit). For every additional participant (e.g. if your husband would like to attend with you), the additional cost is RM50.

Working with children and teenagers for the past 5 years has truly been an experience. It has encouraged me to find out how they become who they are, by going back to their roots, i.e. how they were raised.

When my daughter, Monica was born I was curious and wanted to know how to guide her in all aspects of her development. This encouraged me to sign up for a Certificate in Childhood Development in April 2008. Through my studies, as I was surfing the internet, I found out that in America parents were teaching their babies to sign as a form of communication.

Having already had a background in Sign Language, I decided to teach Monica on my own but there was no structure to my teaching methods. Then I came across BSM and its products, and it gave me everything I needed.

Monica is now 16 months old and she can sign and say about 90 words. This ability to communicate with my baby daughter has brought us many, many joyous moments. It is my hope to be able to get others to experience this as well and with that in mind I have decided to become an Independent Certified Instructor for the Baby Signs® Programs.

Dr. Koe graduated from Singapore University. She became interested in Breastfeeding when her Professor got a Breastfeeding mothers support group to breastfeed very sick babies in the Hospital 30 years ago. When she had her own children , she breastfed them and saw the amazing effects of breastfeeding on them. Since then she has been promoting breastfeeding and telling mothers and families about the amazing food for babies that make them healthy and smart! :-)

Vietnamese is the official language. English, French and Chinese are spoken (very) occasionally. It's a MUST to bring along a map when hiring a taxi. We were very surprised that most taxi drivers do not speak English, even some simple words. We have to arm ourselves with basic Vietnamese words and a map, so that we can show them our desired location. Most restaurant workers do not speak English too, however most menus have English written under each Vietnamese words, so we can still roughly order some food. Vietnamese food is in a way quite similar to our Chinese or Thai food but with their own style, which is a great dining experience.

Most staff in the hotels speak fair/fluent English.

Do you like my cold hat? :-) I bought it for Vietnamese Dong 30,000, which is around RM7 at the roadside (which was sold by a poor middle aged lady, it wasn't even a stall, she just laid a mat and displayed a few items for sale to feed her whole family). I liked it very much, it kept me warm and bright at the same time. My very good friend, who is also a member of Fabulous Mom team, Casey (our key account executive) had borrowed it when she went to Genting Highlands last weekend, she liked it too.

Eugene and Eu Anne who live in tropical climate like Malaysia really enjoy the cold weather in Hanoi. Basically, we need a cold hat, which will help keeping the whole body warm. We didn't bring any with us, but it's ok, as there were plenty of shops selling it with a wide variety of designs with cheap price. We bought Eugene and Eu Anne's cold hat for Vietnamese Dong 30,000 each, which is around RM7. The stretchy cold hat which Eugene and Eu Anne were wearing could be pulled down low enough to protect the ears and best of all, it's impossible to blow off in the wind. :-)

It's advisable to bring shawls or scarfs to go around our neck and keeping it warm too. Look at the happy Eugene with my shawl around his neck. :-)

Also, don't forget the sunscreen cream/lotion, as the sun's radiation is more intense in cold weather. Lip balm is very important to prevent chapped lips. For nursing moms, you may want to bring the nursing cream to keep the nipples moisturised or you will find it painful when the weather gets really cold. :-) You don't need the lip balm if you have the nursing cream with you, as most nursing cream is widely used to prevent or cure chapped lips too, and most of all, it's edible and safe for babies.

Ngoc Son Temple is founded in 18th century and is located on an island in the northern part of Hoan Kiem lake. It is surrounded by water and shaded tress. It's a peaceful spot to rest while enjoying the beautiful scenes. The temple is reached via the red 'Rising Sun' bridge. The temple is dedicated to the national hero Tran Hung Dao who defeated the moguls in the 13th century.

We strolled around Hoan Kiem lake which is 5 minutes drive from Melia Hotel (taxi fare is cheap, which is around 15,000 Vietnamese Dong = around RM3.60) to see Hanoi city life. Hoan Kiem lake is located right in the heart of the downtown of Hanoi.

This is the picture of me and Liem. Liem is the staff at the executive floor. She is very friendly and helpful. She volunteered to help us in many aspects which was out of her job scope, including offering to take me behind her bike to a wholesale shop in Hanoi selling baby stuff. :-) Even though I was on holiday, I still could not resist to check out my business related stuff, which Ryan called it a kind of 'sickness'. :-) Anyway, I was too timid to get up on her bike, as the traffic in Hanoi is very busy and errr.... a little scary! :-)

We checked into Melia Hotel, which is located strategically at Hoan Kiem district, the heart of the city of Hanoi, which is very near to the very popular "Old Quarters" 36 streets business centre. We stayed in the V (Executive) level deluxe room which costs USD165 per night. We actually booked the V level room by no choice as the rest of the rooms were fully booked. However, we later found out that it was a wise decision as the facilities provided are great.

The price we pay is inclusive of free buffet breakfast, free Wi-Fi service which is great for us to do last minute web surfing on tour info, and best of all, we are also entitled for free flow of tea, coffee, juices and fruits. The lounge also provides afternoon tea and happy hours (free flow of wine, juices, etc...) which usually come along with cookies, mini sandwiches and local delights (for instance: spring rolls) which both adults and kids enjoy. Eugene and Eu Anne get to socialise with other kids too while lounging around the club.

The menu of the room service is limited in Melia Hotel. However, we can always order food from other restaurants in the hotel and get them to send to our room. It's great to dine in the room, after a long day out sometimes. :-) The Vietnamese food served in the El-Oriental Restaurant is great and at reasonable price too.

We flew from LCC Terminal, KLIA via Air Asia airline on the 26 December, 2007 to Hanoi, Vietnam for our year-end holiday. Our flight was scheduled at 6.05am in the morning, meaning that we all had to get up at 3.30am to get ready to go to the airport. Checking in, passing through the customs, etc. will take up time which is good to be there early, since Air Asia also requires all passengers to check in at least 45 minutes before the flight. We went through all procedures smoothly and the flight took off at 6.05am sharp. All of us slept through the flight, which took 3 hours and 30 minutes.

We touched down at Noi Bai International Airport, Hanoi at 8.35am local time. The time difference is one hour. Malaysia is one hour behind Vietnam. The weather is 16'c, which is very cold for us who are used to tropical climate, especially when it's very windy. The weather is cold in Vietnam from November until March, which the minimum temperature is ranging from 14'c to 18'c. This period will be quite fun to visit Vietnam, as traveling is less fatique in this nice cozy weather.

Visiting Kota Kinabalu with Young Children - Part 2 - Hotels

We chose to stay in Hyatt Regency Hotel, which costs around RM300 a night without buffet breakfast. The reason that Hyatt Regency is chosen is that it's in the centre of KK town, it's within walking distance to many interesting places, namely the very popular Sunday Market @ Gaya Street, Filipino Market, Waterfront City and some shopping centres. Also, Ryan has got some membership card from Hyatt group which entitles him to buy 2 nights, free 1 night, so that we could save the free nights to go for another trip. *blink-blink*

Some other hotels which are strategically located are Promenade Hotel, Le-Meridien Hotel, Shangri-La Hotel and Jesselton Hotel. If you are looking into resort living, you may opt for Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru, Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort, Nexus Resort Karambunai or Sutera Harbour Resort. Shangri-La's Resorts and Sutera Harbour Resort are very near to the city, while Karambunai Resort is a bit far, which is around 30km away from the city.

Visiting Kota Kinabalu with Young Children - Part 1 - Flying

Ryan and I have just got back from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah for a 5 days 4 nights trip, with Eugene (4 and a half years old) and Eu Anne (18 months old) tagging along. We traveled via Airasia. We actually drove to LCCT and parked our car there, so that we would not have to queue and wait for taxi, which is much more convenient and stress free for family with young kids like us. The parking fee for 5 days 4 nights is about RM120, which actually comes to almost the same if we were to hire airport limosine, which cost around RM60 for one way. Ryan and I felt that it's worth it to pay that little bit extra for the comfort which we are getting by traveling in our own car, our own leisure, etc... It proved us right, as our flight from KK to KL were delayed for almost 2 hours and we were all exhausted upon arrival in LCCT. Eugene and Eu Anne were both very happy to get to sit in papa's car, after a 'long' trip away from home. Best of all, no queue! :-)

Flying by Air Asia is as comfortable as traveling by any full service airlines, except that you have to pay for the drinks or food you ordered. Airasia has set the 'no outside food' policy. Also, privilege of boarding the flight before the others are only applicable to old folks of 65 years old and above or you may actually pay a little bit extra for the 'express boarding pass'. I'm planning to write to Airasia officially suggesting them to reconsider revising their policy to allow family with young kids to have this privilege too.

Airasia practices free seating, first come first serve. With our clans, we needed the whole role to ourselves. We always boarded the flight later than the rest, but we were lucky to have kind young people who were willing to offer us the seats, so that we did not get separated.
Also, a good tip for moms who fly with young babies: breastfeeding your baby during taking off and landing will help reducing ear pain. Can you see that Eu Anne is comfortably nursing during taking off? :-)

Applying for a Malaysian passport for your baby

We brought Eu Anne to apply for her international passport today. The procedures are simple as we are well prepared by getting all the required documents ready and be in the immigration office early. The whole process took only 15 minutes that Ryan and I could hardly believe it!

Here are the procedures:

1) Get the following ready:

2 x passport size photos of your baby
1 x photo copy of the parent/guardian's identification card
1 x photo copy of your baby's birth certificate

Download the application form here:

Fill up the form in advance and remember to bring the original copy of your baby's birth certificate and the parent/guardian's identification card.

2) When you are in the immigration department, go to counter number 1 to get your number and the officer will help you to check if you have filled up the form correctly.

3) Your number will be called and the oficer will help you through the procedures.

4) Once you are done with procedure number 3, wait for your turn to make payment. You have to pay RM150 to get a 32 pages international passport for your baby (also applicable to any kids below 18 years old).

5) You will be given a ticket to collect your passport in the afternoon if you have applied for one in the morning. It's really that fast and efficient. Well done to our immigration department!
